January / February 2023 Newsletter Highlights

  • The February chapter meeting will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2023 @ 10 AM at The Citizens Library.
  • The December chapter meeting was held on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at The Century Inn.
  • The Washington County Chapter – DAR received a Certificate of Appreciation; Past President Larry Ridgway received a 10-year certificate; Michael Merryman was presented a Veterans Certificate for his grandfather from the National Society
  • Compatriot Gary Timmons was one of two featured speakers that welcomed 13 new citizens at the Federal Court House in Wheeling on November 18, 2022.
  • For the 2022 Wreaths Across America program, the chapter received sponsorships for 2,120 actual wreaths and the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies received 3,197 in our name.
  • New Compatriots, include Tyler J. & Austin J. Schoenfelder, Todd L. Ashmore, Steven C. Morreale M.D./M.P.H., Charles McMillan, and Jeremy William Barton II.

November / December 2022 Newsletter Highlights

  • The December chapter meeting and annual Christmas party will be held at Century Inn on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Noon. Cost is $27.00 per person.
  • Be advised to send your check for $27.00 each payable to George Washington Chapter – SAR along with your menu selection to Edward Schreiber, 113 Tory Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108 no later than November 25, 2022. 
  • The October meeting was held on Saturday, October 8, 2022.
  • Michael Merryman was presented with various awards (i.e., two Oak Leaf clusters and the Silver Liberty Award) for signing over 100 new members. Congrats to Michael!
  • Ron Miller received both the Minnisota Stephen Tyler Award and the DAR Historic Preservation Recognition Award for his work on the cemetery sign project. Congrats to Ron!
  • Our newest member was inducted into the chapter, Compatriot Benjamin Andrews Matheus, who is the son of Compatriot John Mathues.
  • The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies is returning to the one-day ceremony and wreath laying. Please join us on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at Noon.

September / October 2022 Newsletter Highlights

  • October chapter meeting to be held at Breezy Heights Tavern on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at Noon. Reservation deadline is Friday, September 30, 2022. Cost is $22.00 per person. Program will consist of portrayal of French & Indian War Captain William Trent.
  • 2023 SAR dues notices have been sent to all compatriots.
  • Historic Purviance Cemetery memorial ceremony was held on August 20, 2022.
  • Joint CAR, DAR, and SAR picnic was held at the McGuffey Community Park on August 20, 2022. Over 50 Compatriots and guests were in attendance.
  • Wreaths Across America sponsored wreaths may be purchased. See the order form in the downloadable newsletter PDF below.

    July / August 2022 Newsletter Highlights

    • Joint CAR / DAR / SAR Picnic will occur on Saturday, August 20, 2022 @ 3:30 PM in McGuffey Park. RSVP to Ed Schreiber by August 13, 2022. Meal @ 4:30 PM.
    • Fort Henry Days will occur on Labor Day weekend at Oglebay Park in Wheeling, WV.
    • The PASSAR Board of Management meeting will occur on Friday, August 19, 2022 at the Ramada Inn in Washington, PA. The BOM meeting will NOT be held at the George Washington Hotel as listed.
    • New Compatriots John Bruner and Robert Frazier were installed.
    • Compatriot Bruner was installed as the Chapter’s Vice President.

    George Washington Chapter Color Guard that participated in both the annual Memorial Day parade at Claysville, PA and a grave dedication for two Revolutionary War veterans that are buried in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, PA.

    • Luncheon will be held on Saturday, June 18, 2022 @ 12:00 PM at the Meadowcroft Museum of Rural Life. RSVP must arrive to Ed Schreiber by Monday, June 13, 2022.
    • Whiskey Rebellion Festival volunteers needed to man the chapter SAR table.
    • Allegiance Sunday will be held on Monday, July 4, 2022.
    • New chapter members include, John P. Bruner, Alvin L. Rogers, and dual member William Finley (Finley, OH).

    • The Saturday, April 9, 2022 meeting will be held at Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville, PA.
    • Resolution on the passing of Compatrior E. Ward Reighard
    • VP John Burnett received the 10-year service pin and certificate
    • Ed Schreiber presented with a flag certificate
    • Ron Miller received the Lafayetter National Service Medal and three Bronze Oak Leaf clusters.
    • Michael Merryman received seven Gold and three Bronze Oak Leaf clusters.
    • New Compatriots installed, including Alex Brown, Bryan Cunning, and John Mathues.
    • New members include Robert Frazier and Christopher Thomassy.
    • the “History Hunt” program will commence on April 1, 2022 through July 9, 2022.

    • The January 2022 meeting will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2022 at 10 AM at the Citizen’s Library in Washington, PA.
    • The annual Chapter Christmas party was held at the Union Grill in Washington, PA on Saturday, December 4, 2021.
    • Four new members were installed into the chapter: Arthur Keys, Michael Kuklman, Mark Pearson, and Robert “Chip” Zelch
    • Various awards presented to the Chapter and individual Compatriots
    • New officers installed: Michael Merryman – President; John Burnett – Vice President; Gary Timmons – Secretary; and Ed Schreiber – Treasurer
    • Passing of Compatriot E. Ward Reighard on January 9, 2022
    • The Chapter received sponsorships for 2,303 actual wreaths and the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies received 3,489 wreaths on behalf of the Chapter for Wreaths Across America.

    • The December 2021 chapter meeting at the Union Grill in Washington on Saturday, December 4, 2021 at 11:30 AM.
    • 2022 membership dues deadline is November 30, 2021.
    • Awards presented to Michael and Nancy Sippey, Dorothy Bewick, Robert Frazier, Michael Pattison, and Thomas Carson.
    • Ken Cherry presented a program on explorer Christopher Gist.
    • $10,000 grant received from the Washington County Community Foundation for the cemetery signs program.
    • New Compatriots welcomed, including Gary, Christopher, & Alan Coates; Bryan Cunning; Arthur & Alexander Boyd Keys; Brandon & Michael Kuhlman; John Mathues; Joel Zupancic; and Hunter & Fisher Haight.
    • Wreaths Across America will occur on Friday, December 17th from 3 until 5 PM; Saturday December 18th and Sunday December 19th from 9 AM until noon at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

    • The annual picnic was held on Saturday, August 21, 2021 in partnership with local CAR and DAR chapter members.
    • Newest Compatriot Mark Pearson is welcomed to the chapter.
    • 2022 SAR dues need to be paid by the end of November 2021.
    • The annual Wreath Across America ceremony will occur on Saturday, December 18, 2021 at Noon at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
    • The 2024 NSSAR Annual Congress will be held in Lancaster, PA.

    • Chapter meeting will be Saturday, June 19, 2021 @ 12:00 PM at Meadowcroft Museum of Rural Life.
    • Reservations for meeting attendance must be made prior to Saturday, June 12, 2021.
    • The chapter retained the “most active PASSAR chapter” plaque for chapters with 100+ members.
    • Nominations for the SAR flag certificate can be sent to Kurt Winter.
    • Volunteers needed for both the Wreaths Across American Mobile Exhibit as well as for the Whiskey Rebellion.
    • New compatriots welcomed: Kevin Burne, Clark John Hagan, and Junior Member Julian Bennett Lombardi Thomas.
    • The Revolutionary Soldier Memorial sign program has commenced in Washington County, PA.
