  • PASSAR 1st Vice President, and Past Chapter President Kurt Winter swore Bryan Cunning as our new chapter Vice President.
  • The George Washington Chapter Centennial Celebration will be Saturday June 8, 2024, in the Hollywood Casino at The Meadows. The guest speaker will be Andy Masich from The Heinz History Center.

Honoring Our Veteran Compatriots: A Salute to the Sons of the American Revolution on Veteran’s Day

As we stand on the precipice of another Veteran’s Day, it is only fitting that we take a moment to reflect on the valor and sacrifice of those who have served in our nation’s military. Among the countless men and women who have defended the principles of freedom and democracy, the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) stand out as a group dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the ideals of our nation’s founding.

The Sons of the American Revolution:

Founded in 1889, the Sons of the American Revolution is an organization that honors and preserves the legacy of those who fought for American independence during the Revolutionary War. The SAR not only pays tribute to the heroes of the past but also actively supports and recognizes the service of present-day military personnel, maintaining a strong commitment to patriotism and the principles that have shaped our great nation.

A Legacy of Valor:

The members of the SAR, known as compatriots, share a common ancestry with the brave men and women who fought in the Revolutionary War. By tracing their lineage back to these heroic figures, SAR members honor their forebears and commit themselves to the ideals of liberty and justice.

In recognizing the sacrifices made by the SAR and all veterans, it is important to reflect on the words of those who led our nation to independence. Here are five quotes from some of our founding fathers, including the indomitable George Washington, that speak to the honor and courage of those who have served in the military:

George Washington:

“The willingness with which our young people are likely to serve in any war, no matter how justified, shall be directly proportional to how they perceive the Veterans of earlier wars were treated and appreciated by their nation.”

Nathanael Greene:

“We fight, get beat, rise, and fight again.”

Thomas Paine:

“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman.”

Henry Knox:

“Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul.”

Marquis Lafayette:

“The welfare of America is intimately connected with the happiness of all mankind; she will become the honored and safe asylum of virtue, integrity, toleration, equality, and a peaceful liberty.”

On this Veteran’s Day, let us pay homage to the Sons of the American Revolution and all those who have selflessly served our nation. Their commitment to the principles of freedom and justice has forged a legacy that continues to inspire generations. As we reflect on the words of our Revolutionary War leaders, may we remember that the liberties we enjoy today were secured through the unwavering dedication and sacrifice of our veteran compatriots.

  • SAR dues should be paid no later than the end of November to ensure your renewal.
  • The chapter’s 100th anniversary occurs in 2024 so Kurt and Gary are seeking volunteers to assist with event planning, logistics, and participation. Please reach out to them to offer your help.
  • The chapter welcomes new Compatriot Matthew D. Saxton.
  • PASSAR President Troutman presented Gary Timmons with the Gold 250 SAR Anniversary medal at the August 19, 2023, joint picnic.

George Washington Chapter Participates in 2023 Memorial Day Ceremonies

George Washington Chapter Grieves the Loss of Dick Mellon

The George Washington Chapter grieves the loss of Samuel R. “Dick” Mellon, a longtime Compatriot of the Sons of the American Revolution.

Samuel R. (Dick) Mellon (90) died on May 18th, 2023 at the Donnell House.

Dick was born in Claysville on April 6th, 1933, the only child of Richard S. and Elsie K. Mellon. 

He graduated from Claysville High School in 1950 and served a 3-year enlistment in the US Army stationed in Germany the last 2 years. He became a gunsmith working at Buck Trew’s Bentleyville Sport Shop for over 30 years. Dick was a highly skilled gunsmith known for making many custom rifles and shotguns for sophisticated sportsmen. After Buck Trew’s gun shop closed in the early 1990s Dick worked for a while for Shumacher Construction and then the Gun Runner sport shop for a number of years. 

Dick was an avid grouse and deer hunter in his younger years, spending many days with his good friend, Bob Moore, traversing the hills and valleys of Greene County and West Virginia hunting grouse. He was a life member of the Frazier-Simplex Rifle Club where he competed in the Mon Valley Rifle League and the Suburban Pittsburgh Rifle League. Dick was a member of the NRA, American Legion, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), the Claysville Sportsmen’s Club and the Claysville United Presbyterian Church.

Dick is survived by his cousins Sara Jane Rinehart of West Liberty, Carol Parson Miller of Glen Dale, Miriam Lydick of Wheeling, and Jean Hores of Elm Grove, West Virginia.

Arrangements are private and entrusted to Sollon Funeral and Cremation Services, LTD, 30 East College Street, Canonsburg, Phillip L. Sollon, supervisor, 724-746-1000.

The family kindly suggests memorial contributions be made to the Claysville United Presbyterian Church, 134 Wayne Street, Claysville, PA  15323.

2022 Wreaths Across America

December 21, 2022

The 2022 National Wreaths Across America Day occurred on Saturday, December 17, 2022, at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies. The cemetery received over 15,200 wreaths of which the George Washington Chapter acquired 3,197. Every grave was marked with a wreath.

U.S. Constitution 225th Anniversary Celebration

October 2, 2012

Both of these pictures were taken of George Livingston and Gary Timmons with Independence Hall (old Pennsylvania State House) in the background during PSSAR’s 225th Anniversary Celebration of the U.S. Constitution. Over 100 SAR Color Guardsmen took part in a parade across the mall from Independence Hall to the welcome center about three blocks away. The men were led by fife & drum and bag pipers. Twelve of the 13 original colonies were represented as well as 21 states from as far away as California, Texas, and Florida.

The George Washington Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the American Revolution would like to formally welcome you to our new blog! Our chapter is based out of Washington, PA, which has a rich history in the French & Indian and Revolutionary War Eras. We have approximately 85 members many of whom attend our meetings that are held on every third Saturday of every-other-month in various locations within the local Western Pennsylvania region.

We encourage you to visit our website and offer any comments and suggestions for content that we may include within our blog. Additionally, we invite you to attend any of our meetings and events and consider joining the Sons of the American Revolution as we continue to expand our membership.
